The Handmaid's Tale touches upon a lot of topics with vigorous feminism but what broke my heart as if a knife tore through it was Atwood's decipherment of the current state of affairs where she does not point to a specific gender as the culprit but the idea that women are to be objectified if the world is to progress. In the novel, although majority women are oppressed, other women do enjoy a life of luxury with men, hinting that it is all in the thought. It's magically dull, pure dystopian, but still gives you a glimmer of hope thanks to its vociferously charming lead character Offred. One of my best reads of 2019. TN.
