In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry, an orphan, lives with the Dursleys, his horrible aunt and uncle, and their abominable son, Dudley. One day just before his eleventh birthday, an owl tries to deliver a mysterious letter—the first of a sequence of events that end in Harry meeting a giant man named Hagrid. Hagrid explains Harry's history to him: When he was a baby, the Dark wizard,...

This is a great book for it's age group but someone needs to knock it down a peg or two on account to the plot being derivative. J.K. Rowling has picked a few chapters out of The Worst Witch and The Secret of Platform 13 and that annoys me. But there is a horde of fans who will compare this book to Pilgrim's Progress. J.K. Rowling's strong suit is her use of dialog though and the net result works for pre-teens.

Read the entire series to my boys---together and individually. Daughter was sadly not interested.

It's Harry Potter... What else it there to say? Gorgeous, brilliant book and an equally good series (if not better).

This series is far more than children's literature. It is a fantasy for every age.

a brilliant story. it's so accessible, and has elements of everything. the books allow you, as the reader, to learn and grow with the characters, and i got sucked so deeply into the storyline, that i would rarely leave my room except to use the bathroom. so much better than the movies.

Read the book before the film. The film miss so much important events and factors for dramatic effects, if you read the book first you will be a Potter fan for life. The first book is nice and short, an in depth introduction into Harry Potter, this book is the pathway into the depth and excitement of Hogwarts and a life of magic. Read it! You won't regret it.

A fabulous beginning to a magical series. The characters tug your emotions in every direction. While the climax is not as action packed and exciting as the later books in the series, the characters are well established and the storyline is well set up to captivate you for a marvellous seven year journey.

This book is a masterpiece of children's fiction. It gave me a sense of escapism and strengthened my bond with Harry Potter (I feel connected to it because if it were real, the First Task from GoF would have been taking place the very moment I was born). Rowling has managed to capture childhood fantasy and games in a single novel, and for that, I thank her.

The beginning of one of the most epic and fantastical series ever published - what else is there to say?

This book is obviously a classic for any Harry Potter fan out there. Though it is not the best book out of the series and though it is very much a kid's book, the story itself is still one that can appeal to readers of all ages.
