I really wanted to love this book, but it was soooo boring. Some parts were definitely really good and the action was well told, but there was too many bits that dragged on and on and on.

The best part about this book on audio is the amazing narrating, the many voices performed by William Hootkins, and the visuals he created. I would find it difficult to stay with this book if reading it - it is long and drawn out - and is not one I completely enjoyed because of the whaling, but it was interesting to listen to all the drama.

One of two books I did NOT read for a college literature class---it was too long and I was certain I wouldn't like it....I was wrong, wrong, wrong. I read this years later and loved every single page...could not tear myself away and it is one of my favorite all-time books.

I guess I'm the odd ball. Did not like this book at all except maybe as a historical document. It's difficult reading because of the antiquated shipping terms etc. The only way I can like this book is if I view it as a comedy. I read a book review (from an authoritative source) one time that proposed this book was written as a satire and comedy. In that context, then it's great!

My favorite book of all time. I read it 3x and plan to read it again. This is the great American novel.
